This month, we are bringing back a fan favorite SACH speaker, Colin Ryan! Colin is a master storyteller who has captivated audiences at The Moth, NPR, and at his many financial well-being workshops. So you can imagine how excited we are to have him lead a storytelling workshop at our Assembly. Take it away, Colin!

Have you ever been moved by a story? Have you wondered why it stuck with you?
I do too. I love stories—I’ve told stories live on stage for years now, and now I’m turning those stories into a book.
In my experience, sharing stories is a wonderful skill for connecting with others, it’s a fun artform, and it offers a great way to process your own experiences.
In our discussion, we’ll explore questions like:

  • What distinguishes a good story from a bad story?
  • What are some experiences you’ve had that would make for an interesting story?
  • How can you tell stories better? Or shorter? Or in a more engaging way?
  • How can stories help you deal with hard moments and give you authorship in your own life?

We’ll look at some story examples and determine what makes them good (or not good!). You’ll also have time to reflect on your own story ideas, and if you’re feeling brave, get some constructive feedback from the group.
